Meet Christian….Christian was born a healthy baby, or at least they thought. When he was 15 months old, his Mommy and Yaya, (that means grandma) noticed that he had stopped sitting up alone, rolling around, crawling and lifting my head. They were very concerned. They went to see his pediatrician and he sent them to see a neurologist. A couple of weeks later they found out he had SMA (Spinal Muscular Atrophy.) The doctor said that he would not live past 2 years old. That is the day his fight began. You see, SMA stands for Spinal Muscular Atrophy and it’s the number one genetic killer of children under two years old. It causes children to lose muscle strength necessary to move, cough, swallow and even breathe. A slight cold can put an SMA child in the hospital and cause major complications.
